1. What is Complete the set?
The Complete the set block offers the product a customer is currently viewing together with up to three companion products as a single set, with one Add all to cart button and a displayed saving.
Use it to turn a single-product visit into a multi-item order, for example a skincare cleanser with its toner and moisturiser.

2. 🚨 MUST READ: Create the matching discount in Shopify admin
🚨 The Discount value in this block is display only - it does not create a discount.
The block shows the saving you type in, but the price the customer actually pays is decided by Shopify. If you enter a saving here without creating a matching discount, customers will see one figure in the block and a different total at checkout.
Before you publish, go to Shopify admin > Discounts and create an automatic discount that matches the Discount value and Discount type you set in the block.
3. Common Use Cases
🤔 How to set up the Complete the set block?
STEP 1: Add the block
Open a Product template, select the Product information section, click "Add block" and choose "Complete the set".
STEP 2: Write the heading text
Edit the Eyebrow (the small line above the heading) and the Heading, then set Heading alignment to Left, Center, or Right.
STEP 3: Pick the companion products
Open Product 1, Product 2, and Product 3 and select a product in each. Leave any of the three empty to show fewer companions.
💡 Note: The product being viewed is added automatically and always sits first in the list. You only choose the companions.
STEP 4: Set the quantity for each companion
Leave Quantity at 1 unless the set includes more than one of an item, for example two matching cushion covers.
STEP 5: Enter the saving
Under Price and discount, type your Discount value and choose the Discount type.
| Setting | Options | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Discount value | Text | Blank |
| Discount type | Percentage / Fixed amount | Percentage |
| Only apply discount once per order | On / Off | On |
🚨 Remember: create the matching automatic discount in Shopify admin > Discounts. See section 2 above.
STEP 6: Choose how sold-out items behave
Set Out of stock to Hide set (recommended) or Disable button.
STEP 7: Click "Save" when done
🤔 How to lock a companion to one specific variant?
Each companion can either be fixed to a single variant or left open for the customer to choose.
STEP 1: Find the variant ID in Shopify admin
Go to Products, open the product, and click the variant you want. The ID is the long number at the end of the browser address bar, after /variants/.
For example: https://admin.shopify.com/store/shopname/products/1234567/variants/36485954240671
-> The variant ID is 36485954240671.
STEP 2: Paste it into the block
In the Theme Editor, open the matching Product group and paste the number into Variant ID.
💡 Leave Variant ID blank to show a variant picker instead, so the customer chooses the size or colour themselves.
⚠️ If the variant does not exist: the companion shows as Unavailable. Check that the ID belongs to the product selected in the same group, and that the variant has not been deleted.
🤔 How to give each product its own set using a metafield?
Configuring companions in the Theme Editor applies the same set to every product that uses the template. If you want a different set per product, use a metafield instead.
STEP 1: Create the metafield definition
In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Metafields and metaobjects > Products and add a definition with the namespace and key custom.set_companions, of type Product (list of products).
STEP 2: Fill it in on the product
Open the product in Shopify admin, scroll to the Metafields area, and add the companion products to that field.
⚠️ The metafield replaces the block's list - it does not merge with it. A product that has a value in custom.set_companions ignores Product 1, Product 2, and Product 3 in the Theme Editor entirely. Products without the metafield continue to use the block's own list.
💡 Note: A companion with a single variant is added directly. A companion with several variants shows a variant picker so the customer can choose.
🤔 How to handle sold-out items in the set?
The Out of stock setting decides what customers see when one item in the set is unavailable.
| Option | What customers see | Best for |
|---|---|---|
|
Hide set (recommended) Default |
The whole block is hidden, leaving no empty space on the page. | Most stores. Customers are never shown a set they cannot buy. |
| Disable button | The set stays visible, the Add all to cart button is disabled and its label changes to Sold out, and the unavailable item is marked. | Stores that restock quickly and want customers to see what the set contains. |
💡 Note: This applies to any item in the set, including the product being viewed.
🤔 How to style the block?
STEP 1: Decide whether to show the description popup
Leave Show description quick view on so customers can read a companion's description without leaving the page.

⚠️ Do not confuse this with Quick view. Show description quick view controls the small description popup inside this block only. It has nothing to do with the theme's Quick view overlay section.
STEP 2: Set the colours
Open the Colors group and set the background, heading, text, badge, and line and border colours, plus the primary button in all four states (button, button text, button hover, button hover text).
💡 Note: Dark colour settings only appear when Theme settings > Theme mode > Enable theme mode is turned on.
STEP 3: Click "Save" when done.
