1. What is Product disclosures?
Product disclosures lets you display legally-required warning or safety information for your products on the storefront - things like health warnings, material safety notices, or regulatory disclosures.
Shopify already gives you a place to write this content: the built-in Disclosures metafield on each product (Shopify admin > Product detail page > Disclosures). Maximize adds the missing piece - actually showing that content to customers - through a Disclosures block you can add to several product-facing sections, plus a setting to show it in the cart.
⚠️ Note: This feature only displays content - it doesn't let you write disclosures. To add the actual warning/safety text, go to a product in your Shopify admin and fill in its Disclosures metafield. See Shopify's Product disclosures guide for how to set that up.
When you create a disclosure in Shopify admin, you also choose where it should appear: Product page, Cart, or Checkout. Maximize displays entries assigned to Product page (through the block below) and Cart (through the theme setting below) - entries assigned to Checkout are handled entirely by Shopify's own checkout, outside the theme.
2. Where can you add it?
| Location | What you get |
|---|---|
| Product information, Product details, Quick view | A Disclosures block (limit 1 per section) with a heading and a choice of Tab or Drawer display. |
| Product three columns, Product showcase | The same Disclosures block, plus extra layout controls: inner spacing, padding, border, and color scheme (light/dark). |
| Cart drawer, Cart page | No block needed - a single Show disclosures toggle in Theme settings shows each cart item's disclosures automatically. |
3. Location & Setup
To add the Disclosures block to Product information, Product details, Quick view, Product three columns, or Product showcase:
- Go to "Online Store" > "Themes" > "Customize".
- Open the section you want (e.g. Product information).
- Click "Add block" and choose "Disclosures".
To show disclosures in the cart, no block is needed - just turn on a setting:
- Go to "Online Store" > "Themes" > "Customize".
- Click the Theme settings tab (gear icon, bottom of the left sidebar).
- Go to Cart > Cart features.
- Turn on Show disclosures.
4. Highlight Features
- No extra setup on Shopify's side: Works with the Disclosures metafield Shopify already provides - just fill it in and add the block.
- Two display styles: Show disclosures inline as a tab, or tucked away in a drawer that opens on click.
- Works across the product-buying journey: Product page, Quick view, and the cart all support showing disclosures.
- Graceful fallback: If a disclosure only has a title and no content, the block simply shows the title as static text instead of a clickable row.
5. Common Use Cases
🤔 How to add and display the Disclosures block on your product page?
Goal: Show a product's warning or safety information on the Product information, Product details, Quick view, Product three columns, or Product showcase section.
STEP 1: Fill in the disclosure content
In your Shopify admin, open a product and fill in its Disclosures metafield, making sure it's assigned to show on the Product page. This is where you write the actual warning/safety text - the theme only controls how it's displayed.
STEP 2: Add the block
In the Theme Editor, open the section you want, click "Add block", and choose "Disclosures".
STEP 3: Set up the block
- Heading: The title shown above the block (defaults to "Product disclosures").
- Display style: Choose Tab to show disclosures inline as an expandable row, or Drawer to open them in a popup when clicked.
- Open this tab by default (Tab style only): Turn on to have the disclosure content already expanded when the page loads.
- Use secondary background: Turn on to give the block a shaded background (matching the look of the Table of information block); turn off to blend it with the section's main color scheme.
On Product three columns and Product showcase only, you also get:
- Inner spacing and Padding: Fine-tune spacing inside and around the block, separately for 🖥 desktop and 📱 mobile.
- Show border: Turn on to add a border around the block.
- Color scheme (light) / Color scheme (dark): Pick which color scheme the block uses in each mode.
⚠️ Note: If a disclosure has a title but no content, it displays as plain text instead of a clickable row - there's nothing to expand.
STEP 4: Click "Save" when done.
🤔 How to show disclosures in the cart?
Goal: Show each cart item's disclosures in the Cart drawer and Cart page, without adding a block.
STEP 1: Assign the disclosure to Cart
In your Shopify admin, open the product and make sure its Disclosures metafield entry is assigned to show on Cart (an entry assigned only to Product page won't show up here).
STEP 2: Open the setting
Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize, click the Theme settings tab (gear icon, bottom of the left sidebar), then go to Cart > Cart features.
STEP 3: Turn it on
Toggle on Show disclosures. This is on by default, and applies to both the Cart drawer and the Cart page - there's no separate setting for each.
STEP 4: Click "Save" when done.
🤔 How to customize the warning message color?
Disclosure warning text uses its own color, separate from your other theme colors, so it stays noticeable wherever it appears.
STEP 1: Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize, click the Theme settings tab (gear icon), then go to Colors.
STEP 2: Find Warning message (listed after Error message) and pick a color for Light and Dark mode. It defaults to #C49A0C for both.
STEP 3: Click "Save" when done.
