1. What is Age verification?
Age verification is a popup that gates access to your storefront behind an age confirmation. It shows automatically as soon as a customer lands on your site, asking them to confirm they meet your minimum age before they can continue browsing.

⚠️ Note: This popup always shows immediately, with no delay - and in the Theme Editor, clicking away to another section and back to Age verification (or any of its blocks) will always bring the popup back up, regardless of whether it was already confirmed. This is the same behavior as the Popup section.
2. Section Components
| Section | Age verification (Overlay group) - A popup shown on page load, asking customers to confirm their age before browsing. | |
|---|---|---|
| Available blocks | Heading (default) | The popup's title (e.g. "Age verification"). |
| Text (default) | The question shown to customers (e.g. "Are you 18 years old or older?"). | |
| Confirmation button (default) | The Yes/No buttons customers respond with. | |
| Subheading | Available to add, but not included by default. | |
3. Location & Setup
To add Age verification:
- Go to "Online Store" > "Themes" > "Customize".
- Scroll to the Overlay group at the bottom of the left sidebar.
- Click "Add section" (below the other Overlay sections).
- Search for and select "Age verification".
4. Highlight Features
- Shows automatically: Appears on page load with no delay - no need to trigger it manually.
- Remembers confirmed visitors: Once a customer confirms their age, they won't see the popup again until your chosen storage period expires.
- Fully positionable: Choose where the popup sits on desktop and mobile, independently.
- Custom background: Use a plain color scheme or add a background image, with separate options for desktop and mobile.
- Built-in decline flow: Customers who decline see a customizable message - no extra setup needed.
5. Common Use Cases
🤔 How to set up the Age verification popup?
STEP 1: Add the section
Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize, scroll to the Overlay group, click "Add section", and search for "Age verification".
STEP 2: Position the popup
- Layout: Set the Desktop position (9 options, e.g. Top left, Middle center, Bottom right) and Mobile position (Top, Center, or Bottom) separately.
- Alignment: Set how the content (heading, text, buttons) is aligned inside the popup - Left, Center, or Right - separately for desktop and mobile.
STEP 3: Set the appearance
- Background media: Choose None for a plain color background, or Image to add one.
- If Image is selected, upload a Desktop image and, optionally, a separate Mobile image (leave it blank to reuse the desktop image on mobile).
- Adjust Overlay opacity to control how visible the image is behind your content.
STEP 4: Fine-tune spacing and color
- Padding: Set top/bottom/left/right padding inside the popup, separately for desktop and mobile.
- Gap: Set the spacing between blocks inside the popup (tablet follows the desktop value).
- Color scheme (light) / Color scheme (dark): Choose which color scheme the popup uses in each mode.
STEP 5: Click "Save" when done.
🤔 How to customize the Yes/No confirmation buttons?
The Confirmation button block controls both buttons customers respond with, plus what happens when they decline.
STEP 1: Set the layout
- Button direction: Horizontal (default, buttons side by side) or Vertical (stacked).
- Button size: Small, Medium, or Large.
STEP 2: Set up the Accept button
- Button label: Defaults to "Yes".
- Button style: Primary (default) or Secondary.
STEP 3: Set up the Cancel button
- Button label: Defaults to "No".
- Button style: Secondary (default) or Primary.
- Cancel message: The text shown below the buttons when a customer clicks Cancel (defaults to "Sorry, you must be at least 18 to purchase from our store."). It slides into view with a short animation.
⚠️ Note: Clicking Cancel doesn't save a confirmation - it only shows the Cancel message. The popup will show again the next time the customer visits or reloads the page.
STEP 4: Adjust spacing
- Padding: Set padding around the block, separately for desktop and mobile.
- Gap: Set the spacing between the two buttons.
STEP 5: Click "Save" when done.
🤔 How to control how long a confirmation lasts?
Goal: Decide how often customers need to re-confirm their age.
STEP 1: In the Age verification section settings, go to Display rules.
STEP 2: Set Storage expiration to the number of days a confirmation should last (1-90 days, default 30).
STEP 3: Click "Save" when done.
