Bulk order (B2B feature)
Ask AI

1. What is Bulk order?

Bulk order is a B2B-focused section that lets customers quickly build a large order - either by searching and adding products one by one, or by importing a CSV file of SKUs and quantities - then add everything to cart at once. Built for wholesale buyers who already know what they want and need to move fast.

2. Section Components

Group name Purpose
Content Set the heading, subheading, and intro text that introduce the Bulk order section to customers.
B2B Restrict the section to B2B customers only, and set what guests and non-B2B customers see instead.
Section layout Adjust the section's width, spacing, and whether a divider line is shown.
Colors Set the color scheme for the section.

💡 Note: Product thumbnails in the search dropdown and order table are always shown at a 1:1 (square) ratio - this is no longer configurable. Price and sale price also no longer have separate color overrides here; they follow your Theme settings > Colors. Sold-out products are automatically excluded from search results.

3. Location & Setup

To add this section:

  • Open the Shopify Theme Editor (Online Store > Themes > Customize).
  • Navigate to a page template.
  • Click "Add section" and select Bulk order (if it isn't already there by default).

4. Common Use Cases

🤔 How does a customer search for and add products manually?

STEP 1: The customer types a SKU, product name, or variant into the search bar. A dropdown opens directly below it, showing results grouped by product (parent) with each variant listed underneath (child) - so they can add a single variant, or expand a product to see and add across all its variants.

STEP 2: Each variant row shows live stock status (In stock, Low in stock), price, and a quantity stepper. Adjusting the quantity - or just clicking "+" - adds that variant straight into the order table below; there's no separate "add" button to click.

STEP 3: The dropdown stays open after adding, so the customer can keep searching and adding more items. It only closes when they click outside of it.

💡 Note: With keyboard navigation, a single matching result can be added instantly with Enter. With multiple results, use Tab or the arrow keys to move between rows, then Enter to add.

If a product has Volume pricing or Quantity rules set up, both are reflected directly in the dropdown as the customer adjusts quantity.

🤔 How does a customer import products via a CSV file instead?

For large orders, customers can skip manual searching and upload a CSV file instead.

STEP 1: Below the search bar, click "Download example file" to get the template - a CSV with just two columns: SKU (required) and Quantity (optional - defaults to 1, or to the minimum quantity if a Quantity rule applies).

STEP 2: Fill in up to 100 rows, then drag the file into the drop zone (or click to browse). Once it passes validation, a confirmation shows how many rows were detected and the "Import" button becomes active.

STEP 3: Click "Import". A progress bar processes each row against your store's SKUs; matched rows are added to the order table, while unmatched or ambiguous SKUs are listed in an error summary underneath so the customer can fix and re-upload.

⚠️ Note: If any row in the file fails validation (wrong file type, missing SKU, invalid quantity, more than 100 rows, or the same SKU listed twice), the entire file is rejected - none of it imports until the file is fixed.

💡 Note: Unlike manual search, importing a file replaces the entire order table rather than adding to it - the customer gets a confirmation popup before this happens. Also, manual search and Import can't be used side by side in the same session: once a customer starts adding items by search, the Import option stays hidden until the table is completely emptied.

🤔 How does the order table work?

Every item added - by search or import - appears in the order table below the search bar, with the same parent/variant structure as the search dropdown: Product, Status, Price, Quantity, and Total columns.

  • Quantities can be adjusted directly in the table, the same way as in the search dropdown.
  • Clicking the trash icon on a variant row removes just that variant; clicking it on a parent row removes the product and all of its variants at once. Either way, a confirmation popup appears first.
  • The footer bar shows the total item count and order total, alongside "Add to cart" and "Remove all".

🤔 What happens when a customer clicks "Add to cart"?

Clicking "Add to cart" adds every item in the table at once. What happens next depends on whether the requested quantities are available:

If everything's in stock: the cart drawer opens right away, showing the newly added items - no page reload needed.

If a quantity exceeds what's available: the section shows an inline message under the table instead, explaining what happened - for example:

  • "Only 10 items were added to your cart due to availability." - the item was already in the cart, and the new request pushed past what's available.
  • "The maximum quantity of this item is already in your cart." - the cart already holds the maximum available quantity of that item.

💡 Note: In this second case, the cart icon's item count may not update immediately - the page needs a reload to reflect it correctly. This is a platform-level quirk rather than a theme bug, so it's worth setting that expectation with customers rather than treating it as an error.

🤔 How to restrict Bulk order to B2B customers only?

STEP 1: Click on the Bulk order section, then under B2B, toggle on "Only show for B2B customers" (default OFF).

STEP 2: Set the Contact label (default: "Contact us") and Contact link that will display instead, and toggle Open this link in a new tab if needed.

STEP 3: Click "Save" when done.

💡 Note: With this toggle ON - guests see a log-in prompt instead of the section, and logged-in customers without B2B access see your Contact button instead. Only customers with B2B access can see and use Bulk order as normal.

🤔 How to customize the heading and intro text?

STEP 1: Click on the Bulk order section to open its settings panel.

STEP 2: Under Content, edit Subheading, Heading, and Text as needed. Wrap any part of the Heading or Text in [ ] to apply the Highlight effect to that portion.

STEP 3: Adjust Heading size, Heading tag, Text size, Highlight effect, Text transform, and alignment to match your brand.

STEP 4: Click "Save" when done.

5. Change Logs

Version 2.0.0 - August 2026

  • New – CSV Import: Customers can now import a CSV file of SKUs and quantities to fill the order table in bulk, instead of searching manually.
  • Changed – Search dropdown replaces popup: The old "Select Products" popup is gone. Search now opens a parent/variant dropdown directly below the search bar, with live quantity steppers, Volume pricing, and Quantity rules shown inline.
  • Changed – Order table structure: The table now mirrors the dropdown's parent/variant structure, and removing a row (variant or parent) now shows a confirmation popup first.
  • New – B2B restriction: Added an "Only show for B2B customers" setting, with a configurable Contact button shown to guests and non-B2B customers instead.
  • Removed – Image ratio and Price/Sale price color settings: Thumbnails are now fixed at 1:1, and price colors follow your Theme settings > Colors instead of a per-section override.

Version 1.9.0 - July 2026

  • New – Bulk order: New B2B section for the dedicated Bulk order page, letting customers search, select, and add multiple products and variants to cart at once.
