1. What is Combined listings?
Combined listings is Shopify's own app for grouping separate products - like the same jacket in four colors, each with its own images, description, and URL - under one unified listing on your store. When a shopper picks an option (e.g. a color), the page updates instantly to that specific product's own title, price, photos, and URL, without a full page reload.
Maximize v2.1.0 integrates with Combined listings so your product pages, product cards, and Quick view all work with it out of the box - no theme configuration required beyond having the app set up.
Before you start, you'll need:
- Shopify plan: Plus or Enterprise (Combined listings isn't available on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced).
- Theme version: Maximize v2.1.0 or later.
- The Combined listings app installed from your Shopify admin.
2. Location & Setup
Step 1 - Install the app:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Apps.
- Search for Combined listings and install it.
Step 2 - Create a combined listing:
- Open the Combined listings app and click "Create combined listing."
- Enter a title - this becomes the parent product name shown on the storefront.
- Click "Add products" and select the child products to combine (up to 60).
- Set a shared option name (e.g. "Color") and give each child product a unique value (e.g. "Red", "Blue"). You can add up to 3 shared option names, with up to 2,000 total option values across all products.
- Click "Save," then change the status from Draft to Active so it appears on your storefront.
Note: There's nothing to configure in the Theme Editor. Once your combined listing is Active in Shopify admin, Maximize automatically shows the right option picker and updates content when shoppers make a selection.
3. Highlight Features
- Each child product keeps its own title, price, images, description, URL, and SEO.
- Selecting an option updates the whole page instantly, without a reload.
- Works with Product information and Product three columns with no extra setup.
- Supports any number of option values, including combinations beyond Shopify's 250-variant limit.
4. Common Use Cases
🤔 How does a combined listing behave on the product page?
Applies the same way to both Product information and Product three columns.
- The option picker shows every option value from the combined listing (e.g. four color swatches). Selecting one updates the title, price, description, gallery, URL, and every other block (inventory status, ratings, SKU, volume pricing, etc.) to match that child.
- An out-of-stock or unavailable child shows its option value as disabled, and Add to cart reflects its real status (Add to cart, Pre-order, Sold out, Unavailable).
- The quantity field resets to 1 (or the applicable minimum) every time a different option is selected.
🤔 How do combined listings show up on collections, cards, and direct links?
- Active child products appear individually in collections with their own title, image, and price - not the parent's. The parent's own card, if shown, uses the first child's image and price.
- Unlisted children are hidden from collections, search, and recommendations, but stay selectable through the option picker on the parent's page - or reachable directly via their own URL.
- Every child product keeps its own storefront URL, title, and description for individual SEO, with the option picker still available to switch to a sibling.
5. Compatibility
Combined listings works out of the box with all of Maximize's core product sections and blocks - Product information, Product three columns, Product showcase, Product bundle, Quick view, Sticky Add to cart, Product comparison grid, Product recommendations, Recently viewed, and the full set of product page blocks (Variant picker, Inventory status, Ratings, Volume pricing, Quantity rules, Back in stock alert, Preorder, Siblings, and more).
6. Troubleshooting
The option picker is missing or doesn't show all options
Check that:
- Your combined listing's status is Active (not Draft) in the Combined listings app.
- Your theme is updated to Maximize v2.1.0 or later.
- Your total option values don't exceed 2,000 across all child products.
The page content or URL doesn't update when I select an option
This can happen if your browser is serving a cached version of the page. Try a hard refresh: Ctrl + Shift + R (Windows) or Cmd + Shift + R (Mac). If it persists, confirm you're on Maximize v2.1.0 or later.
Color swatch images show the wrong product's photo
This happens when "Replace color options with variant images" is enabled in Theme settings > Product swatches. Try disabling this setting if your swatches show the wrong images when switching between child products. If the issue continues, contact support.
7. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a specific Shopify plan to use Combined listings?
Yes. Combined listings is available only on Shopify Plus and Enterprise plans - not on Basic, Shopify, or Advanced.
Will my existing products and variant pickers still work normally?
Yes. Installing the app and updating to Maximize v2.1.0 doesn't change how regular (non-combined) products behave - your existing variant pickers, Add to cart buttons, and product pages work exactly as before.
Can I use Combined listings with more than 250 variants?
Yes. Maximize v2.1.0 supports any number of option values, including combinations that exceed Shopify's standard 250-variant display limit.
Can I use Combined listings with subscription products?
No. Shopify's Combined listings doesn't support subscription products - combining a product that has a subscription may cause unexpected behavior on the product page.
